About the coin
The halfpenny, a coin from before decimalisation in 1969, was worth 1/24 of a shilling. Reflecting a monetary system introduced by Charlemagne in the late 8th century, a pound was divided into 20 shillings, each of 12 pence, with each penny further divided into four farthings; thus, a pound contained 480 halfpennies and a shilling contained 24 halfpennies. From 1937 onwards, the reverse of the coin featured an image of the Golden Hind. The coin is linked to the saying "you daft ha'porth," derived from "A halfpennyworth," used to suggest a lack of wit or intelligence.
